This American Family
Gladney Darroh, Chairman of the Boys & Girls Harbor Board of Directors, saw his first musical drama, “This American Family,” come alive on stage at the Hobby Center Zilkha Hall May 29 – 31, 2015.The play was adapted from Darroh’s novel, Women of Uncommon Strength. Darroh wrote the lyrics from “This American Family,” and award winning Broadway composer, arranger, and musical director, Steven Jamail, composed songs for the production. The play was directed and choreographed by nationally known director and choreographer, Paula Hammans Sloan. This is an emotionally powerful play about two families, with women of strong morals, faith and values – and the men they love. It is a story about courageous individuals who have suffered tremendous personal losses but refuse to abandon their core beliefs in family and selfless sacrifice. Most of all, it is a story about the healing of the human heart, the importance of faith, and the redeeming power of love.
The Saturday matinee was reserved for Gold Star and Blue Star mothers, and U.S. veterans. The Sunday evening performance was reserved for Houston law enforcement officers and Houston Fire Department firefighters, and their families.
The story about the children was parallel to the stories of many children at Boys & Girls Harbor. The Harbor staff set up a display in the lobby at Zilkha Hall Theatre which was a wonderful opportunity to introduce the Harbor to hundreds of new friends.
